Frequently Asked Questions

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Writing (5723) exam measures the writing, revision, and language skills required for entry into teacher preparation programs and educator licensure. It evaluates your ability to edit and improve written text, apply standard English conventions, analyze research materials, and produce well-organized, evidence-based essays.

The test assesses both technical writing skills (grammar, usage, sentence structure) and higher-level composition skills, including argument development and source-based writing.

Most states require a scaled score between 150 and 160, but requirements differ depending on your state’s certification standards. Praxis scores are reported as scaled scores. A scaled score adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between test versions, ensuring fairness across administrations. Because of this scaling process, the number of questions you answer correctly does not directly equal your final reported score.

Always check your state’s Department of Education website to confirm the exact passing score you need. You can access information on passing scores by state on the ETS website.

The exam is organized into two main content categories:

  • Text Types, Purposes, and Production (60%)
  • Language and Research Skills for Writing (40%)

Knowing how the exam is weighted helps you prioritize both essay practice and grammar review.

The Praxis Core Writing (5723) is 100 minutes long and is computer-delivered. It is divided into:

  • 40 minutes for selected-response questions
  • 30 minutes for the argumentative essay
  • 30 minutes for the informative/explanatory essay

Selected-response and essay scores are reported separately on your score report.

Managing your time effectively across all three sections is critical for maximizing your score.
