Frequently Asked Questions

The Praxis 5008 is the Elementary Education: Mathematics and Science subtest within the Praxis 5006 Elementary Education Assessment.

It measures the content knowledge required for prospective elementary teachers in:

  • Mathematics (60%)
  • Science (40%)

Mathematics includes:

  • Numbers & Operations
  • Algebraic Thinking
  • Geometry & Measurement
  • Data, Statistics & Probability

Science includes:

  • Earth & Space Science
  • Life Science
  • Physical Science

Approximately 70% of questions assess content applied to a Task of Teaching, meaning you must apply knowledge in classroom-based scenarios.

Yes. The Praxis 5008 provides an on-screen scientific calculator for the entire Mathematics and Science subtest. The calculator is built into the computer-delivered testing system—you may not bring your own calculator.

Because the calculator interface may feel different from a handheld model, you are strongly encouraged to practice using the official version before test day. You can access the practice calculator here.

The Praxis 5008 consists of 85 total questions, divided between two content areas:

  • Mathematics – 51 questions
  • Science – 34 questions

The exam includes a combination of:

  • Selected-response (multiple-choice) questions
  • Numeric-entry questions, where you calculate and type in your answer

Because Mathematics makes up the majority of the test, strong preparation in numbers and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, and data analysis is especially important. Some questions may be unscored and used for test development purposes.

Most states require a scaled score between 150 and 160, but requirements differ depending on your state’s certification standards. Praxis scores are reported as scaled scores. A scaled score adjusts for slight differences across test versions. This ensures fairness across administrations. Because of this scaling process, the number of questions you answer correctly does not directly equal your final reported score.

Always check your state’s Department of Education website to confirm the exact passing score you need. You can access information on passing scores by state on the ETS website.
