The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading (5713) is one of the three Praxis Core exams required by many states for admission into educator preparation programs or teacher licensure.

The exam measures your ability to:

• Analyze and interpret informational and literary texts
• Identify key ideas and supporting details
• Understand author’s purpose, tone, and argument
• Interpret vocabulary in context
• Evaluate evidence and draw logical inferences

The reading passages reflect real-world materials educators encounter, including articles, paired passages, short informational texts, and brief statements drawn from books, journals, newspapers, and visual data sources.

The Praxis 5713 exam is divided into three content categories:

• Key Ideas and Details (35%)
• Craft, Structure, and Language Skills (30%)
• Integration of Knowledge and Ideas (35%)

Passages range from approximately 100–200 words and may include paired texts. Questions require close reading, not outside knowledge.

Most states require a scaled score between 150 and 160, but requirements differ depending on your state’s certification standards. Praxis scores are reported as scaled scores. A scaled score adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between test versions, ensuring fairness across administrations. Because of this scaling process, the number of questions you answer correctly does not directly equal your final reported score.
