Frequently Asked Questions

The Praxis 7004 is the Elementary Education: Social Studies subtest of the Praxis 7001 Multiple Subjects exam. It is designed to determine whether a prospective elementary teacher has the foundational social studies knowledge necessary to teach at the K–6 level.

The exam focuses on three major domains:

  • United States History, Government, and Citizenship (45%)
  • Geography, Anthropology, and Sociology (30%)
  • World History and Economics (25%)

The test is content-focused and measures the breadth of knowledge expected of a beginning elementary teacher. It evaluates your understanding of historical concepts, civic structures, geographic reasoning, and economic principles that form the foundation of elementary social studies instruction.

Many test takers consider Praxis 7004 challenging because it requires broad knowledge across multiple social studies disciplines. Areas that candidates often find more demanding include understanding major U.S. historical eras and constitutional principles, applying core economic concepts such as supply and demand or market systems, and interpreting maps or geographic data. Questions frequently assess not just recall of facts, but the ability to apply concepts in classroom-style scenarios.

With organized content review, familiarity with the test framework, and consistent practice answering stimulus-based questions, the exam is very manageable. Focused preparation across all content categories is the key to success.

Most states require a scaled score between 150 and 160, but requirements differ depending on your state’s certification standards. Praxis scores are reported as scaled scores. A scaled score adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between test versions, ensuring fairness across administrations. Because of this scaling process, the number of questions you answer correctly does not directly equal your final reported score.

Always check your state’s Department of Education website to confirm the exact passing score you need. You can access information on passing scores by state on the ETS website.

The Praxis 7004 includes 55 selected-response (multiple-choice) questions and is 55 minutes long, giving you approximately one minute per question.

Because the test is timed at roughly one minute per item, efficient pacing and strong content recall are important.
