My Best Resource for Prepping for the Praxis!

As a transitioning Math Special Education teacher with a secondary math and business background, the Teaching Elementary Reading Praxis has been a challenge for me. The information simply wasn't sticking while trying several text based study sources. Praxis 5205 is considered moderately challenging because it measures both deep knowledge of reading development and the ability to apply that knowledge in instructional scenarios. The exam includes 90 selected-response questions and 3 constructed-response questions in 150 minutes. Approximately 25% of your total score comes from written responses focused on assessment data and instructional decision-making.

To pass, you need a strong understanding of phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, writing, and reading assessment. Success requires more than memorizing definitions. You must be able to analyze student errors, interpret assessment results, and recommend evidence-based instructional next steps.

Most states require a scaled score between 150 and 160, but requirements differ depending on your state’s certification standards. Praxis scores are reported as scaled scores. A scaled score adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between test versions, ensuring fairness across administrations. Because of this scaling process, the number of questions you answer correctly does not directly equal your final reported score.

Always check your state’s Department of Education website to confirm the exact passing score you need. You can access information on passing scores by state on the ETS website.

Yes. If you do not pass the Praxis 5205, you may retake the exam after a 28-day waiting period. The 28-day period begins on your test date. Before retesting, review your score report carefully and focus on weaker content areas.

Because the Praxis 5205 includes constructed-response questions, scores are not released immediately after testing. The written responses must be evaluated before final results are posted, so official score reports are typically available several weeks after your test date.

You will receive an email notification when your scores are ready. At that time, log into your ETS Praxis account to access your total scaled score and your performance breakdown by content category.

Constructed-response answers are evaluated by trained ETS scorers using standardized scoring rubrics to ensure consistent and objective scoring.
