Audio Course - Praxis Teaching Reading 5205

I started my teaching career as an art teacher, took a break for five years, let my certification lapse, and then decided to come back as a horticulture teacher. In order to do this and be in compliance, I needed to take the Elementary Reading praxis, having never taught reading primarily, and without having taken any recent coursework in the subject.

I scored a 60 percent score on my reading praxis practice test— and while I think that may be a passing score itself, felt it was way too close to failure for my comfort. With one week to go before the test, I got the audio guide and the study guide booklet from Kathleen Jasper, and got a crash course in a teaching field I had little familiarity with.

The elementary reading praxis is difficult, but I feel like these resources adequately prepared me with a basic understanding of content knowledge. I’m conditionally certified and am working on restoring my full teaching certificate over the next couple years, while also getting back into the clasroom— it feels good, and I have these study materials to thank for giving me the confidence and competence to ré-enter this world.

This was a great resource, especially when I had the book out in front of me. It helped to hit the most important information in the book.

Before discovering Kathleen Jasper’s Science of Reading book and course, I felt completely lost and overwhelmed. The terminology, the strategies, the questions—everything so hard to understand as a ESL student. I doubted myself constantly and approached standardized tests with anxiety and hesitation.
But this book—and the course that comes with it—completely transformed my experience. Kathleen breaks down each concept so clearly and makes complex ideas easy to understand. Slowly, the fog lifted. I began to grasp not only the core principles of the Science of Reading, but also how to apply them when reading test questions. What once made me nervous now feels manageable—even exciting.
This course didn’t just prepare me for a test; it reshaped how I approach reading instruction and gave me the confidence to face any standardized exam. It even spilled over into my teaching—I now feel more prepared, more focused, and more empowered in the classroom.
I’m so grateful for the guidance and clarity this resource provided. Without a doubt, I’ll be continuing to explore more of Kathleen Jasper’s courses as I grow as an educator.

The digital study guide with the audio course was the perfect combination for me. I listened to one section and then I would study the corresponding section in the study guide. Each section had a quiz which helped me to know what concepts I needed to review. After a few weeks of using this material, I felt confident for the test.

It gives you a summary of what is in the study guide and is nice to have to listen to while in the car. It would be better if it would automatically play between each section, it currently does not.
