Frequently Asked Questions

The Praxis 5001 can feel challenging because it combines four separate subject areas into one exam: Reading & Language Arts (5002), Mathematics (5003), Social Studies (5004), and Science (5005). Candidates are tested on both content knowledge and how well they apply that knowledge in classroom-based scenarios. With targeted preparation, strategic practice, and strong elimination skills, the exam becomes much more manageable.

The Praxis 5001 is absolutely passable with the right preparation. Many candidates struggle due to unfamiliar question structures and tricky distractor choices. Success comes from focused review, consistent practice, and learning how to Think Like a Test Maker® to recognize patterns and avoid common traps.

The Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001) includes four subtests:

  • Reading & Language Arts (5002)
  • Mathematics (5003)
  • Social Studies (5004)
  • Science (5005)

Each subtest assesses foundational content knowledge aligned to what elementary teachers are expected to know. Questions include selected-response items and require both subject understanding and instructional reasoning.

There is no single “hardest” Praxis exam. Difficulty depends on your background and strengths. For some candidates, Mathematics (5003) is the most challenging. Others find Science (5005) or Social Studies (5004) more demanding. The best approach is to identify your weakest subtest and focus preparation there while strengthening your test-taking strategy.

The full Praxis 5001 exam takes approximately 4 hours and includes all four subtests. Some candidates choose to take all four in one session, while others register for individual subtests separately. When taken individually, each subtest has its own designated time limit.
