In this blog post, we're breaking down exactly what the Praxis Core exam is, who it's for, and what each of its three subtests actually covers, so you can walk into your prep with a clear plan instead of a vague sense of dread.
The Praxis Core is officially labeled a basic skills exam, and that label throws a lot of test takers off. "Basic skills? No way, this is so hard." And yes, it is hard for many people, especially if you've been out of high school for a while. The math is roughly a 10th grade level, and so is the reading and writing. If you haven't touched this kind of math in years, it can feel a lot more intimidating than the word "basic" suggests.
Who actually takes the Praxis Core
Two main groups sit for this exam: pre-service teachers and career changers. Pre-service teachers are typically college of education students who are working toward graduation and certification. Career changers are people who already hold a degree, have spent time working in another field, and are now pursuing teaching as a second career.
This distinction matters because career changers often haven't thought about 10th grade level reading, writing, or math skills in a long time. If you fall into that group, know that the difficulty isn't a reflection of your intelligence. It's simply that these particular skills have gone unused for a while.
This is not a content exam
It's worth repeating: the Praxis Core is not testing your ability to teach reading, middle school math, or social studies. Those skills are assessed on separate content or subject area exams. The Core is closer in spirit to the SAT or ACT. It measures whether you have the same 10th grade level knowledge of math, reading, and writing that most states require of high school graduates, because that's the baseline many states have set for teacher candidates.
Where to find the real exam blueprint
Before buying any prep materials, go straight to the source. Every major exam, including the SAT, ACT, and Praxis Core, has an official blueprint and test specification document. Search for "Praxis Core test specification and blueprint" or "Praxis Core study companion" to find it on the ETS website. This free document lays out every skill and specification you'll be tested on, along with guiding questions and rubrics.
Reading: 56 questions, 85 minutes
The reading subtest includes 56 multiple choice questions and gives you 85 minutes to complete them. It covers five content categories:
- Main idea
- Inference
- Vocabulary and context
- Author's purpose
- Double passages
Passages can range from a short paragraph to a full page, and some questions are based on infographics or charts rather than straight text. This mirrors how students are assessed on their own high school reading exams.
Writing: grammar, mechanics, and two essays
The writing subtest combines multiple choice grammar and mechanics questions with two written essays: one argumentative and one source-based. You have 100 minutes total to complete both essays, which means strategy matters as much as skill.
Your grammar score and your essay scores are averaged together, so you can't afford to bomb either section. If grammar is your strength, it can help offset a weaker essay score, and vice versa, but the goal is to be solid in both areas. Math: number sense, algebra, geometry, and statistics
The math subtest, officially 5733, includes 56 questions in 85 minutes and covers four content categories:
- Number sense
- Algebra
- Geometry
- Data, statistics, and probability
This is a 10th grade level math test, not a calculus-heavy exam like the one required for high school math certification. You'll work through algebra, geometry, and some statistics and probability, but nothing beyond that scope.
You don't have to be "a math person" to pass
If you've told yourself the story that you're just not a math person, it's worth challenging that belief. Being successful in other subjects doesn't mean math is off the table. Math is a skill you can build with consistent practice, the same way you built skills in any other subject.
