Frequently Asked Questions

The Praxis 5047 (Middle School English Language Arts) exam measures whether prospective middle school ELA teachers have the content knowledge and instructional skills needed to teach grades 5–9.

The test is computer-delivered and consists of 110 selected-response questions and 2 constructed-response questions. It is completed in 160 minutes: 130 minutes for the selected-response section and 30 minutes for the constructed-response section.

The exam assesses reading, language use and vocabulary, writing, speaking and listening, and English language arts instruction.

Most states require a scaled score between 150 and 160, but requirements differ depending on your state’s certification standards. Praxis scores are reported as scaled scores. A scaled score adjusts for slight differences in difficulty between test versions, ensuring fairness across administrations. Because of this scaling process, the number of questions you answer correctly does not directly equal your final reported score.

Always check your state’s Department of Education website to confirm the exact passing score you need. You can access information on passing scores by state on the ETS website.

The Praxis 5047 is generally considered moderately challenging because it assesses both content knowledge and instructional application at the middle school level.

Many candidates find it demanding because:

  • It requires strong reading comprehension and literary analysis skills.
  • It tests grammar, vocabulary, and language conventions.
  • The constructed-response section requires clear, organized written explanations.
  • It includes instructional decision-making specific to middle grades learners.

Candidates with a strong background in ELA content and experience planning middle school instruction typically perform well. Focused preparation aligned to the official test blueprint significantly improves success.

The Praxis 5047 includes four main content categories:

  • Reading (46%)

  • Language Use and Vocabulary (11%)

  • Writing, Speaking, and Listening (18%)

  • English Language Arts Instruction (25%)
