What is the Praxis 7813?
The Praxis 7813, officially known as the Praxis Elementary Education Mathematics, is a subtest of the Praxis Elementary Education 7811 exam
Individuals who are preparing to become certified as elementary school teachers take this exam.
Individuals who are preparing to become certified as elementary school teachers take this exam.
The Praxis CKT 7813 is designed to assess candidates' understanding of mathematical concepts and their ability to apply this knowledge in real-world scenarios. It covers various areas of mathematics, including number sense and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability.
If you are trying to become a certified elementary education teacher, you will take the Praxis CKT 7813 or an exam like it. Most states want their teachers to have comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts and their ability to apply this knowledge in real-world scenarios. It covers various areas of mathematics, including number sense and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability.
What does the Praxis 7813 consist of?
You will have 85 minutes to complete the Praxis CKT 7813. This subtest is to test your ability to solve mathematical problems, reason mathematically, and communicate mathematical ideas effectively. The exam also focuses on pedagogical content knowledge, which includes understanding how to teach mathematical concepts to diverse learners, selecting appropriate instructional strategies, and assessing student understanding.
The assessment is not aligned to a particular grade or course, but it is aligned to the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.
The Mathematics Subtest is divided into the following four categories:
- Counting and operations with whole numbers
- Place value and decimals
- Fractions, operations with fractions, and ratios
- Early equations and expressions, measurement, and geometry
Within these four main content categories are several other key components:
Counting
This section tests your understanding of Counts and skip counts of whole numbers between 0 and 1,000 and Connects counting to cardinality.
Operations with Whole Numbers
Here, your understanding of representations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division (including objects such as manipulatives, drawings, and diagrams) and relates these representations of operations to expressions and equations; solving of mathematical and real-world problems involving the four operations, including solving problems by using properties of operations
Place Value and Decimals
Measures understanding of place value, reading/writing numbers, comparing/ordering decimals, rounding, operations with decimals, and problem-solving. They evaluate students' grasp of concepts and application skills.
Fractions, Operations with Fractions, and Ratios
This curriculum covers fractions comprehensively, focusing on their conceptualization as part-whole relationships, multiples of unit fractions, and ratios. Students grasp the characteristics of fractions less than, equal to, and greater than one. They understand equipartitioning, a fundamental concept for comprehending fractions as part-whole relationships. Fraction equivalence is emphasized, and various strategies are taught for comparing fractions. Operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with fractions and whole numbers are explored, along with applications such as scaling. Students build a solid foundation, moving flexibly between these concepts and honing their intuition for problem-solving.
Early Equations and Expressions
This curriculum focuses on early equations and expressions, teaching the concept of algebraic equivalence and the use of the equal sign for relational equivalence. Students identify true equations, solve equations using the four operations, and apply substitution. The standard order of operations is followed, including parentheses and the distributive property. The idea of variables is introduced, connecting to unknown quantities and varying quantities. Students also learn to compare quantities using less-than and greater-than symbols (<, >).
Measurement
Covers measurement by describing measurable attributes of objects and comparing objects with common attributes. Students select appropriate measurement tools, calculate and estimate perimeter, area, volume, and angles in mathematical and real-world situations, and convert between measurement units.
Geometry
covers geometry, including shape attributes, composing and decomposing shapes, and drawing shapes based on specific attributes. Students grasp the concepts of lines, line segments, rays, and angles in two-dimensional figures. They also classify two-dimensional figures based on their properties.
Each of these categories includes questions that test your knowledge of content as it relates to teaching math to early learners. Demonstrate their ability to solve mathematical problems, reason mathematically, and communicate mathematical ideas effectively. The exam also focuses on pedagogical content knowledge, which includes understanding how to teach mathematical concepts to diverse learners, selecting appropriate instructional strategies, and assessing student understanding.
You will be required to have an understanding of mathematical concepts and their ability to apply this knowledge in real-world scenarios. It covers various areas of mathematics, including number sense and operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and probability.
Finally, many of the questions are scenario-based, which means you will be presented with a classroom situation and will be required to choose the most effective approach to increase student achievement in the area of Mathematics.
These questions can be quite challenging for new teachers who have limited experience in the classroom.

The best ways to pass the Praxis Elementary 7813
Everyone is different in terms of how they want to prepare for the exam. People have different strengths and weaknesses, and it’s important you choose the right program for you.
The following are a few resources you can consider when preparing for this test.
The ETS Study Companion
The first and most important thing you can do to pass your Praxis 7813 test is to examine the test structure and content of the exam by reviewing the test specifications in the Praxis 7813 Study Companion.
This document is developed by ETS and shows you everything you are responsible for on the exam. It even has practice test questions similar to what you will see on test day.
Study Guides
Beyond that, most people prefer to use a study guide with practice tests to prepare for the exam.
Our Praxis 7813 study guide is fully aligned with the test specifications and blueprint outlined in the ETS Study Companion. It also has hundreds of practice test questions for each content category, so you are fully prepared for the exam.
How many questions do I need to get right to pass?
It is difficult to predict exactly how many questions you must get correct to pass the Praxis 7813 because a scale score is used rather than a raw score. This means that your raw score—the number of questions you get correct—is put into a formula to calculate a scale score.
To keep things simple, we recommend scoring at least a 75% on the practice tests before you take the exam. Getting 75% of the questions correct when practicing indicates you are ready to take the test.
